The Coleman Foundation Launches COVID-19 Matching Grants Program

Coleman Foundation is matching grants to 80 Chicago area nonprofit organizations

In an effort to support its grantees during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Coleman Foundation has invited 80 organizations to participate in its COVID-19 Matching Grant Program. Through the Program, organizations, which span the Foundation’s program areas, may earn a grant award of up to $25,000 as a match to donations from private individuals received between April 15 and June 1, 2020. To ensure that grantees employ campaign strategies that work best for activating their own donors, the Foundation is not setting additional parameters that limit how grantees use this match opportunity.

Over the past seven years, the Foundation provided matching grant opportunities to its grantees with a focus on Giving Tuesday, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. During that time, the Foundation awarded 367 grants totaling over $3.5 million. Those matching grants enabled participating organizations to raise more than $11.5 million.

Recently, Giving Tuesday organizers established #GivingTuesdayNow as a global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Organizations participating in the Program may choose to incorporate #GivingTuesdayNow into their matching grants campaigns but are not required to do so.

“Our hope is that each organization takes the lessons we have all learned from our previous matching grants programs and develops the campaign that works best for them during this unique time,” said Clark McCain, Senior Program Officer. “We want our grantees to be successful in earning as much of the available Foundation funds as they can. We want to empower them to use this match opportunity to generate the best possible response from their donor base.”
