The Coleman Foundation Announces Third Quarter 2019 Cancer Care and Health Rehabilitation Services Grants
In the third quarter of 2019, the Coleman Foundation approved grants totaling $650,000 to institutions serving the Chicago metro area.
$350,000 – Improving Access to Breast Health Services in Communities of Color
This award is for capital support of a new 3D digital mammography machine to improve access to breast health services and increase equity for women of color in the North Lawndale, South Lawndale and surrounding communities. Saint Anthony Hospital’s mammography program is tailored to meet the challenges of patients in its service area. Patients need services that are culturally sensitive; address the cost of care; and address transportation barriers. A new mammography machine will help ensure patients have access to high quality mammography services.

$300,000 – Managing Opioid Use in Cancer Patients: Co-managing Pain and Addiction
This award is to support a collaboration between University of Illinois Hospital and Mile Square Health Center (a federally qualified heath center) to develop a pathway from oncology to primary care to addiction specialists. Clinicians will determine how to best screen patients, analyze test results and develop transitional care plans that focus on adequate pain control and reduction of risk for development and treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). Through this project, clinical teams will develop protocols for prescribing opioids for cancer patients with the aim to influence national guidelines for oncology patients. Without such guidelines, oncology clinicians are challenged to treat patients, leaving them with a high risk of having or developing an opioid use disorder and/or becoming addicted.
